How to Replace Rear Axel Seal 2000 - 2006 Toyota Tundra
Rear Axle Shaft Bearing
Removal
1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel. Remove brake drum. Using a dial indicator, check axle shaft bearing end play and axle flange runout. On Sequoia, maximum axle shaft bearing end play is .024" (.60 mm). On all other models, maximum axle shaft bearing end play is .028" (0.71 mm). On all models, maximum axle flange runout is .004" (0.10 mm). Replace axle shaft bearing or axle shaft as necessary.
2. Remove ABS speed sensor (if equipped). Remove brake shoes and hardware from backing plate. Disconnect parking brake cable from backing plate. Disconnect brakeline at wheel cylinder and plug openings. Remove backing plate-to-axle housing nuts. See Fig. 1 . Remove rear axle shaft with backing plate from axle housing. Remove "O" ring from axle housing.
3. Temporarily install nuts to backing plate serration bolts. Using a hammer, remove serration bolts from backing plate. Using a grinder, hammer and chisel, remove retainer and ABS speed sensor rotor from axle (if equipped). Install serration bolts, washers and nuts to backing plate, and tighten nuts to install serration bolts to backing plate. Remove the 4 nuts and washers from serration bolts.
4. Remove snap ring from rear axle shaft. Using the 4 nuts, attach Rear Axle Shaft Puller (09521-25011) to backing plate. See Fig. 2 . Using a press, remove axle shaft with bearing retainer from backing plate. Remove puller from backing plate. Using a lathe and a dial indicator, check axle shaft runout at center of axle. See Fig. 3 . Replace axle if shaft runout exceeds .079" (2.01 mm). Check axle flange runout. Replace axle if flange runout exceeds .004" (0.10 mm).
5. Using Oil Seal Puller (09308-00010), remove outer oil seal from backing plate. Using a press and Replacer (09951-00610), press axle bearing from backing plate.
6. Using Oil Seal Puller (09308-00010), remove inner oil seal from axle shaft housing.

Wheel Bearing Replacer (09515-30010), install NEW axle bearing into backing plate. Ensure beveled side of bearing faces differential. Install NEW outer oil seal into backing plate. Coat oil seal lips with grease.
2. Using a press and Replacer (09316-00051), install axle bearing and backing plate onto axle shaft. Install NEW snap ring onto axle shaft. Using a press and Replacer, install NEW ABS speed sensor rotor and NEW bearing retainer onto axle shaft. On Sequoia, install bearing retainer to within 6.681-6.759" (169.7-17I1.7 mm). On all other models, install bearing retainer to within 4.772-4.850" (121.2-123.2 mm) from axle flange. See Fig. 4 .
3. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW "O" ring when installing axle shaft and backing plate to axle housing. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification.
